I've been thinking about the merchants behind the shop doors.
The ones who unlock the door on a Tuesday in February. The ones who make, sell, frame, repair, collect, cook, imagine. The ones who take the risk of investing in a business, then keep showing up to make it work.
They've chosen to put their time, money, creativity, and livelihood into a town where independence and creativity have long had a place.
I've also noticed there isn't really a place for their voices.
These merchants and restaurateurs are part of the backbone of La Conner's identity and economy. They are visible on our streets, welcome visitors through their doors, contribute to community causes, support local services, employ people, pay taxes, and bring their own particular vision to the town…
